What is a better review score worth to your property?
Review scores aren't vanity metrics. Hospitality research ties them directly to the rate you can charge and how often you sell the room. Here is what a modest lift is worth — and what it costs to get there.
Why your score moves your revenue
Guests choose between properties they have never seen, so the review score does the selling. The most cited work on this is Chris Anderson's study for the Cornell Center for Hospitality Research (2012). It found that a 1% improvement in a hotel's online reputation supports up to a 0.89% higher average daily rate, while occupancy still rises by up to 0.54%.
Translated to the scores you see on Booking.com or Google, a lift of just +0.3 points — say from 8.0 to 8.3 — lets a property capture roughly 2% to 4% more room revenue. Ye et al. (2011) point the same way from the booking side: better-rated hotels convert more of the guests who find them online.
More bookings
Higher ratings convert more browsers into bookers. Ye et al. (2011) found a 3.75% rating rise lifts online booking conversion by roughly 1.9%.
Pricing power
Anderson (Cornell, 2012): each 1% gain in online reputation supports up to a 0.89% higher rate while occupancy rises by up to 0.54%.
Fewer silent failures
A single cleanliness failure costs 213 points on J.D. Power's 1,000-point scale. Catching it while the guest is still there is what protects the score.
Where the points are lost
Scores rarely fall because of one dramatic failure. They fall because of small problems nobody fixed in time. J.D. Power's guest satisfaction studies rank an unclean room as the single biggest detractor, and ReviewPro's analysis of 2.5 million reviews found noise to be the top complaint in 19 of 20 major cities.
Most of that friction is silent: 57% of guests bothered by noise never tell reception. They tell the review site instead.
That is the gap RoomCheck closes. A device in every room lets guests ask for help in two taps, without the awkwardness of a phone call, and routes the request straight to the right team on WhatsApp. Problems get fixed while the guest is still on property, inside the window where good recovery can actually raise satisfaction.
Run your own numbers
Set your room count, average daily rate and occupancy. The calculator applies a conservative 2.9% revenue uplift — the middle of the 2–4% range — and compares it with what RoomCheck's subscription would cost you.
Model: annual room revenue (rooms × 365 × rate × occupancy) × 2.9% uplift for a +0.3 review score, after Anderson (Cornell, 2012): a 1% reputation gain supports up to +0.89% rate and +0.54% occupancy. Cost is RoomCheck's published subscription, excluding devices.
Projected annual return
Estimate only — actual results depend on your market and starting score.
How the model works
- Room revenue = rooms × 365 nights × average daily rate × occupancy.
- Revenue gain = room revenue × 2.9%, the midpoint uplift for a +0.3 review score.
- Cost = RoomCheck's base subscription from our published pricing, billed monthly, for 12 months. Per-room rates step down as your room count grows.
- Not included: in-room devices, any setup fee and optional add-on features. Annual billing would lower the cost further.
The result is an estimate, not a promise. Your market, your starting score and how quickly your team responds all shape the outcome. But the direction is consistent across the research: guests reward properties that make it easy to ask and quick to respond.
